I am no longer with the Bay Guardian

Hi, my friends, all the people I love and care about in this city. I'm sad to announce that after 30 years, I have left the Bay Guardian. I am proud of all the work that we did over those years, but sadly, it has come to an end.

I was informed late last night by the owner, Todd Vogt, that my "resignation" had been accepted, although at no point did I resign.

Todd and I had a major disagreement over personnel and editorial direction, and this is how it ended. I was hoping that if my employment at the paper I have helped build over all these years had to end, it would be on more friendly terms. But alas, that was not to be.

The good news is that Blogger is free, and I will fancy up this blog in the next couple days, and I will continue to present perspectives and news about progressive San Francisco.

  3. Tim, here's an idea... Form a non-profit high quality competing publication!

I'm a great admirer of your work and what you've done throughout the years at the SF Bay Guardian.

    Suggestion:

    1. Put together a 2-page business plan
    2. Setup a KickStarter or GoFundMe crowdfunding campaign
    3. Once the budget for the first issue is met, publish and get going

I will send you an email to follow up.

  4. Thank you, Tim. Watching local news degrade over the last 20+ years has been a hard pill to keep swallowing, and I think you and the other dedicated staff at the SFBG kept it going as long as you could. I hope you can regroup with other journalists online. Don't forget to start a new facebook account so you can post links there, too.

  5. Well, it took you long enough to get fired from a newspaper job. Have a beer somewhere appropriate, I'll join you in spirit.

  9. I am so sorry to hear this, Tim. I owe you and Bruce and Jim so much for teaching me what real investigative reporting is and giving me the opportunity to cover so many important stories throughout the 90's that made a real difference in people's lives and the collective life of the City. And many of those photos from those stories now reside in various museums and public collections internationally - all shot for the Guardian on assignment from you. They can never defeat us who search for the truth behind every cliche and barred door, underneath billy clubs and thrown fists and high heel projectiles of lawyers. They can steal our copyrights, our infrastructures, but they can never take away the voice of the people. We WILL RISE UP again!! And again. And again. And you will always find a place to lead the charge. Fuck 'em. And thank you for everything. Judi Parks

  10. If I recall, the Guardian was born during a newspaper strike at the Chron & Ex. 30 years and getting paid for it is a proud record. I was a freelance photographer and publishers thought that meant it was free of charge. You have an advantage as a writer... however the www. has made many of us as reporters, even if we are reporting nothing. Good luck and now is the time not to look back... the future is now happening.

I have been where you are. Trust me.

  12. Hi Tim. Deborah Giattina here. I was just recollecting this one election night in which you called in a piece for me to post to the blog about the dismal returns on some long forgotten progressive ballot initiative. In typical fashion your take included the bright side of things. A comment from a reader the next day had the title "Earth to Tim Silver Lining Redmond," and since then I've always thought of you that way. Good luck out there. Obviously, the SFBG will never, ever be the same without you. Count on me being a regular here.

  13. The remaining staff should walk out in protest until they hire you back. I honestly can't see the point of a Bay Guardian without you. Hopefully they'll come to their senses.

  14. I bet it will be a cold splash making this adjustment. I am betting that you are opening up your mental rolodex of 95000 colleagues and thinking a few new ways to fill some holes in progressive journalism. Some commonsense input from Maples on web stuff, maybe... some kind of PR stunt... kaboom!

  15. Had the pleasure of meeting you once as well as watching a lot of great SFBG based work over the years. Whatever the story behind this hope somehow it works out as positively as possible for both you & SFBG.

  16. Thanks for all your work Tim, carry on. Shame on the remaining staff if they don't take any action in solidarity. We have to oppose Vogt, we are nurturing a Murdoch wannabe.

  17. Tim, you did an incredible job at the Bay Guardian, and I am honored that I had a chance to work with you there. You always inspired me to be a better reporter, and a better thinker. Whenever I would write a particularly blistering takedown of some awful company, you would always say, "You know -- you really should call them to get a response before you print that." I think about that all the time. Even though we were doing advocacy journalism, you always wanted us to keep dialogue open with our adversaries, and pushed us to get the perspective of groups we disagreed with. I know you're going to keep raising hell outside the Bay Guardian. But I'm terribly sad that it had to end like this -- it's the Guardian's loss. In sum: You rock. We all have your back.

  18. Tim,

You don't know me, but I am an avid fan of the Guardian. I read it every week, and I think that it may be my favorite periodical of all time. Thanks for making it an amazing read each and every week. It was always a fresh and honest outlook on what goes on here in our fine city. Best of luck in the future.

  20. Backup and big ups from your former cub reporter, now stationed in Boulder in the Rocky Mountain enviro wars. I know you'll give 'em hell in your gracious but sharp way. And I hope they'll listen, because anything less would be utterly asinine. In any case, I look forward to reading your blog and to whatever comes next.

  22. Tim, Prez Carter launched the US into the solar age in 1978. Since the he has built a million houses thru Habitat F H. Yet none of those homes have a single solar panel on them.

  23. Tim- So sorry to hear this disappointing news. The SFBG will never be the same without your leadership.

  24. Tim, "I heard the news today, oh boy..." Utterly sorry to finally hear about your being booted off the SFBG. Your leadership on the paper made it the go-to place for finding out stuff that the Gavin Newsoms, Willie Browns, and Ed Lees of the world wanted swept under the journalistic rug.

Also, props to you for giving a new outlet for L.E. Leone's musings on sports. And let's not forget your having her back when Vogt wanted to can her, probably for grumbling in the pages of the SFBG about not getting paid.

In short, hope there's some way we readers can help you out financially, as I doubt Blogspot pays a living wage.

  25. Tim-
Sad to hear this news. I also got canned by "friends" who bought our paper and needed to cut expenses. At least you went out with a bang, all I got was an announcement of my "stepping down" BS. I love you and your unwavering commitment. You will turn these lemons into lemonade. There is no one on the face of this earth who is as fabulous as you are!
Dead serious! I wish you were in NC right now to sort out this right wing MESS.

  26. Tim, I greatly appreciate your wise hand at the Guardian's tiller and the opportunity to have published a cover story about boxing in San Francisco. It changed a lot of lives for the better. I hope your voice, values, and inspiration continue unabated.
